From Dream Boards to Reality

By Samantha Viola

For school, personal growth, or work-related exercises, we’ve all had to write our goals down before. It may have motivated you for the day, a week, or it’s something you live for every day.

I’ve read about Dream Boards a few times but never really took the time to make one until I learned how via a CD set (I’m dating myself) called: Your Wish Is Your Command. I had started a new job right after graduating college and was willing to try anything to become successful. I was one of the youngest hires, had absolutely no knowledge of what I was selling (payroll, taxes, insurance,) not to mention I lacked a lot of business acumen- and was meant to walk in to a CEO’s office and consult him/her on how I can help their business run more efficiently?! Yeah, pretty nerve racking.

My Dream Board was hung above my desk and inside my closet- staring at me all the time. Needless to say. I went on to become top 10 sales representative in the nation 2 years in a row, spoke on panels amongst CEO’s, saved a lot of money, bought the car I wanted, and took those trips I dreamt of. I was on a high and others started to notice too. I always credited my Dream Board but never got in to how they work so, it’s about time I do…

Like anything, you get what you put in. So, I recommend to take this seriously. I did, and as you see I’ve made them a reality.

How to Dream Board

1. Find somewhere peaceful, that allows you focus. Don’t worry about the “how.” This is about envisioning where you want to be. Think short and long term.

2. Be specific about what you want in your life.

ie: “I want a nice car” vs. “I want a brand-new white Bentley Coupe Convertible with camel interior, 20 inch chrome rims”

3. Envision yourself having those specific things you want. What are you doing once you have them? How does it make you feel? Where do you go from there?

ie: “It’s 7 am on a Friday, I’m leaving my Pilates training session, wearing a black lulu-lemon outfit, feeling heathy and toned, walking to my brand-new white Bentley Coupe Convertible with camel interior and 20 inch chrome rims, feeling like I’ve made it! I have a conference call on the drive back to my home in Malibu. I love where I live. The sun is shining and the views are stunning. The gate to our property opens and I’m excited to get back to my spacious home office where I can daze out to the Pacific Ocean in between emails. We have a private flight to catch this evening. Stuart and I are going down to Puerto Rico to check on the hotel, not to mention have some quality alone time without our beautiful children whom will be staying with the grandparents. Life is good”
4. Now you know what you want and more importantly how you feel having them. Now we build the dream board. You can do magazine clippings, but I simply google images of the things and feelings I want to display. Again, being specific.

Ie:  I have photos of the inside of a jet because I want to envision being inside not on the outside. Sharing happiness and good times with friends as we fly off to a relaxing destination… because this is what I envision.

5. Put the images together on your board. It doesn’t have to be big or perfectly designed. It’s really your preference. Have fun with it- get excited!

For mine, I drag the images on to a landscape word document then print the collage. I recommend to hang it in places you will see every day. A place where you will constantly be reminded of why you’re working so hard. Let it push you.

6. Your dream board should be a “living document.” Update it when you accomplish a visual and add new goals as you desire.

Enjoy your Manifest! x
