Networking 101

By Samantha Viola

If you watch my daily Instagram Stories, you’ll see I attend numerous types of events each week. Why I do this? Expanding and nourishing my networking is very important to building a brand and solidifying new business opportunities. Like they say, “It’s all about who you know.”

From a solid sales career NYC to living in London & traveling the world, I’ve encountered many personality types and cultures… so I decided to share some tips on networking.

These are things I’ve learned from my international business classes, working in sales, reading about emotional intelligence, and just day to day life experience.

 1. Do research beforehand. Whether it’s an event or business meeting, know the brands and/or what the business does. I usually do a quick check on the “about” page. Pending on how much time you have, research the company heads on LinkedIn so you know who you need to get in front of.

When I do the work ahead of time, I’m more confident walking through the door. I’ll be honest, since moving to London I’ve made the mistake of just showing up to events without knowing much. I can only use “I just moved here” for so long.

2. You’ve probably heard it a million times- and that’s because it’s true. Give a strong handshake and look people in the eye.

*Buttt, keep in mind some cultures have different customs in which they don’t shake a woman’s hand such as Hasidic Jewish men. Best bet is to do a quick google search if in a unique city.

3. It’s important to remember people’s names. Of course this could be hard when meeting many people at once; so get in the habit of saying their name back to them during the conversation to help you remember. Oddly enough, this can also strengthen a relationship by making them feel more comfortable and the conversation more personal.

4. Have an elevator pitch down. You should be able to briefly outline who you are & what you do with ease. Add some personality in to it and be sure not to sound like a robot.

5. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to others. The point of networking is to expand your connections. If you show up and talk to friends but don’t meet any one new then you’ve wasted your time. Everyone has the same objective at these events. Approaching others first shows a sense of confidence and ambition.

So that covers the basics. Now, get out there… Start shaking hands and blessing babies! As always, leave a comment below or email me with any questions!
