Travel Guide: Casa De Campo, Dominican Republic

An Exceptional Vacation & Golf Destination

October 2020, despite a pandemic, I journeyed to the second largest and most diverse Caribbean country, The Dominican Republic.  There is so much culture and history to experience- although I hardly left our resort. Almost 50 years ago, Casa De Campo opened in La Romana as the first resort in the Dominican Republic. My stay was luxurious, relaxing, and adventurous! Below is all you need to know about our stay…or to convince you too book stay 😉

Getting There

As we arrived to the Dominican Republic via the Santo Domingo Airport (SDQ) which is approx. an hour away from Casa De Campo. The La Romana International Airport (LRM)  is actually about 10 mins away but American Airlines didn’t fly in there. Since we knew we wouldn’t leave the resort much we didn’t bother renting a car; we got a ride to and from the resort via Prestige car service. The hotel set it up for us. It cost $170 Rt.

One of my favorite things about staying there is was getting a complimentary golf cart to get around. I thought it was great to have, especially during Covid… we were able to safely get around and social distance.

Speaking of Covid, I was very impressed with all measures Casa de Campo’s had in place. Upon arrival, they cleaned our luggage, took our temperatures everywhere we went, and were constantly cleaning- even our lounge chairs at the beach. They also had Q scans for maps, menus and keyless entry apps. If you forgot or lost your mask, they had plenty of extras to relieve your stress.

Accommodations at Casa De Campo

Casa De Campo Resort & Villas is a world renowned resort, very well known for its scenic golf courses and  exclusive neighborhoods home to many affluent individuals (and celebrities.)  Yes, Casa de Campo is so large there are multiple neighborhoods, a Marina, beaches, private island, and my favorite, Altos de Chevon. Being such a  large community, I was still very impressed with service and level of security.

Guest can choose to stay in their hotel or a luxurious villas in one of the many neighborhoods. We enjoyed our superior king sweet which had stunning high ceilings and a very comfortable bed. Our room overlooked one of the many gold carts- you can watch my YouTube for a full room tour.

What to do in Casa De Campo

There are what feels like endless things to do while you enjoy the tropical oasis, or you can simply lay back and relax. We did a mix of both.

Each of our 5 days there we ended up at Minitas Beach club. This is the main beach at Casa de Campo- unless of course you have a Villa on the beach. Lucky you!

Minitas Beach club has some stores, food trucks, bar, swimming pools, beach sport rentals and of course the beach. The beach itself has some amazing snorkeling as it lays on a nearby reef. I was shocked to see so many sting rays and exotic fish so close to shore.  They have a great restaurant with another bar and very cool pool area. It was def a vibe overlooking the sunsetting over the  ocean while in the infinity pool.

From the beach you can take an excursion to their private beach at Catalina Island. It took about 20 mins to get their and cost $211 for 2 people for a half day. The beach was pristine! The staff were on top of everything and it showed. While there we snorkeled along the rocks. Again it was beautiful but a lot of it was dead, which we see all around the world. That being said, it was much better than most places.

If you are interested in taking a boat out yourself, you can do so in the Marina . They have a lot of impressive yachts there to just walk around and see too. The entire Marina is a village in itself with more restaurants, shops, a grocery story and even a movie theater.

Onsite excursions also include Horse (and donkey) polo, Horseback riding, shooting range, pottery classes, a spa and of course golding. We didn’t have time to do it all, but it go horseback riding on our last day and had so much fun!  We got a great tour of all the horses and then went in the open field for some galloping and trotting. It was a blast, but I was  certainly sore the next day!

There is a wellness spa was a zen sanctuary. We indulged in a 2 hour couples massage which cost about  $440 altogether and was well worth it.

Lastly, strolling around Altos de Chavon is a must. This area of Casa de Campo is a replica 16 century Mediterranean Village. It felt rich with culture and art.. I wish I spent more time there. Prior to visiting Campo, everyone would tell me it was a must see, especially the chapel which many people get married in. The Theater is also a stunning sight to see and still has concerts there! You’ll definitely be taking a lot of pictures here.

Eating in Casa De Campo

The resort concierge was very helpful in booking our meals at the various restaurants in Casa de Campo  & Altos de Chavon. There are 10 different restaurants to choose from, and all of which were delish! I do recommend taking a look at their website prior to going since not all were open when I was there due to the pandemic. During our stay, we ate at:

  • Minitas Beach Club & Restaurant: Located on the beach and next to the infinity pool. A great spot to hang in the afternoon until dinner. We had a few meals and a lot of cocktails here 🙂
  • La Casita: Located in the Marina. We had a beautiful table overlooking the water.
  • La Cana: Restuarnt located near the main reception, so closest to our hotel room. Easiest to get to for breakfast.
  • SBG: A Mediterranean restaurant also in the Marina. It had very chic decor and a beautiful infinity pool in to the harbor.

I didn’t have too many authentic  Dominican meals; however my favorite authentic Dominican Breakfast in a cafe in Altos de Chavon. I also recommend trying: pollo guisado, tostones, habichuelas con dulce, mangu, salpicon, sancocho, chicharron, pastel en hoja, and many more.

And as mentioned, there are a few grocery stores where you can get some snacks  for the room or food to cook in your villa.
