5 High Tea Spots in London You’ll Love!

From a Tea Junkie's Perspective

The British tradition of Afternoon Tea or High Tea began in the 19th century, when the Duchess of Bedford began inviting friends over for an afternoon tea with snacks. Over time it became a  popular social tradition. Today, you can experience a classy tea experience in many chic locations around London.

While living in London this past year I’ve had my fair share of Afternoon Teas. It’s a lovely way to embrace the British culture so, I tend to bring my visitors to experience it. Typically, the restaurant will have a set package price that includes: finger sandwiches, clotted cream and scones, and an array of desserts on display of pretty tiered plates. Accompanied with a pot of tea and if you’d like, some champagne. It’s delish, but beware you may still be hungry afterwards as this isn’t a meal replacement.

If you’re visiting London, I recommend you book ahead of time to ensure you can get a reservation. Afternoon Tea is typically held between 1- 5pm.  It’s kinda pricey, at approx. £30-£75, but it’s the experience.

Below are some of the best places I’ve enjoyed Afternoon Tea

1. Fortnum and Mason

This is one of the most popular places to enjoy High Tea. Infamous for their ‘Tiffany Blue’ color branding and flag ship store that sells homeware, picnic baskets & tea, it’s a staple in England. You may also see pop-up locations around London such as in the Royal Exchange, the Somerset House and even the airport.  Fortnum & Mason has a few  restaurants. However, I personally feel the Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon in the Piccadilly location is best.

2. Aqua Shard

Located on the 31st floor of the Shard building, you can enjoy your tea and finger foods with sweeping views of London City. As a tourist, I feel this is a great way to maximize your time as you can see the city as you enjoy the experience. Not to mention, their Afternoon Tea has an adorable Mary Poppins theme that’ll have you taking tons of photos!

3. Dalloway Terrace

The Dalloway Terrace is one of my favorites spots for high tea because they change the terrace decor each season.  Attention to detail with unique touches are easily visible and a great backdrop for photos. Being attached to the Bloomsbury Hotel, you also have access to their beautiful bar red bar.

Cost £40-£50/ Person

4. Sketch

Located in Mayfair, sketch is a chic afternoon tea, dinner and drinks spot. There are numerous bars, a pink dining room and even a club under their famous egg shaped bathrooms. The afternoon tea takes place in the Pink Art Gallery which is Very Instagramable.

5. The Savoy

The Savoy is one of the most beautiful hotels in London. It’s no surprise they offer such a luxurious High Tea experience in the Thames Foyer. As you can see from the photo below, you are served in a bright extravagant room while a pianist plays softly in the background.

Of the five other locations recommended, the Thames Foyer has the most packages to choose from. In honor of the children’s book, The Tiger Who Came to Tea, which takes place in the Savoy, they now offer a children’s menu for high tea too.  But, the best of all is the Afternoon Tea package which includes a 50 minute massage in their Spa!

Cost £45 – £177/ Person

Some other notable locations to try are: The Hamyard Hotel, Cafe Concerto, The Top of Harvey Nichols, and Harrods. While writing this I also found a great site that list afternoon tea spots by location in London. Have a look here.
